It was on his way to Bastion that Solomon sent a call out. He tried to reach Darien, but received no response to his brother's comm. His next call went to Kabel, and within moments there was a click as she picked up. But it wasn't her. The little voice that came back to him on the other end of the line was small, girlish. Hesitant. "--Hello?"
The sound of it brought a little smile to his face, and in the cockpit of the Justicar Sol's chin rose slightly as he spoke, "Nova, hunny, it's Uncle Sol. Is your mom around?"
"Uncle Sol!!! Hi, Uncle Sol!! Did you know that yesterday we went and --"
He couldn't stop himself from laughing at the little girl's excitement, even as whatever she was about to say was cut-off, her voice replaced by another while he faintly heard the words, "Hush, Nova. You can tell him later, let me talk to him first." He could just imagine the pout that struck the girl's face, her little arms crossed in a wicked hmph while she turned to stalk off somewhere to sulk.
It wasn't long after this that that other voice was with him fully, "What's up, Sol?" This voice was neither young, nor excited. In fact Kabel sounded rather tired to his ears.
"I won't keep you long. You sound exhausted, but is Darien around? I can't reach his comms."
There was hesitation, and a lot of it before Kabel was responding. "Yes, he's with me. We tried contacting you but we couldn't get through. Is everything alright?"
"Yes, just some," his wince was heavy and twisted his face hard, "Personal problems I'm clearing up."
"--Sol." She sounded even more tired with that one word spoken frankly.
"I know," he assured her quickly, "I remember. I will fill you in soon. Just, for now, let me talk to Darien, please."
More silence came from the other end of the line. Where she was, Kabel had turned over her shoulder to see where Darien was sitting not too far away from where she stood. The comm in her hand shifted grip, but it wasn't held out just yet. "Alright, but listen -- we found something in Murra's journals. It's a letter. For Shaon."
"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard that right." But he had, and for a brief moment it had stilled him to his core. Ith'li -- Uncle Ith'li.
"A letter for Shaon." Thinking it was something with their link, Kabel spoke louder before Darien was up. He came to rest his hand on her shoulder, taking the comm from her hand.
"Sol, it looks like she wrote it before she died." That was the voice he wanted to hear, but those words -- they didn't fit with what he had called to talk about. He was suddenly treading water. That other topic was suddenly not nearly as important, in fact it could very much wait for this.
"--What does it say?" His question came lowly, his own hesitation to know taking over his voice.
"Over comms? Come meet us, and we'll discuss it in person."
"I can't," he winced again, "Not right at the moment. If you give me a few days, I'll be able to come around. I got something to take care of first."
"Yeah? Into trouble again, Sol?" Darien asked, glancing toward Kabel and motioning toward where two little heads had started poking themselves out into the open to hear what was being discussed. Kabel moved off to shoo them away.
"Not mine, Spiders'. They were found, Dar. I'm on my way to Bastion to fix some things up and settle their score. That's why I didn't answer my comms; I was with them on Ithica."
Silence came from his brother, Darien rolling the comm unit he held lightly between his fingers, "Are they alright?"
"Newe-un took some damage. Annie has scratches, but she's fine otherwise. I'm going to pay off their debt, they shouldn't be bothered again.
"Alright," Darien's head lowered slightly and then rose again with his nod, "Go take care of that, and then meet up with us so we can show you this thing. Do we need -- are they taken care of where they are at now?"
"Yes, Trinity is looking after them for me until I get back."
"Alright, Sol. We'll see you soon. Safe travels, brother."
"You too," Sol nearly whispered back before reaching out to cut the communications line.
The sound of it brought a little smile to his face, and in the cockpit of the Justicar Sol's chin rose slightly as he spoke, "Nova, hunny, it's Uncle Sol. Is your mom around?"
