Bromus’s beginning was nothing short of servitude and slavery. Born on Ylesia to slaves owned by the Ubixa the Hutt, Bromus had been raised as a laborer. His youth was mostly spent fighting other boys as cruel sport or wandering the tropics of Ylesia whenever he could escape the scornful eye of his masters. His slavers recognized the boy was different than the others. He had an uncanny foresight and understanding absent in boys his age as well as an unshakable will. Furthermore he was quick on his feet and could never be caught unaware. These observations never amounted to more than a curiosity, even to Bromus himself, and were dismissed as nothing more than the wits of a sharp minded slave.
This affinity to the force was neglected and overseen until Bromus, at the age of 12, and several other slaves were sold as laborers bound for Malastare. Hidden in the cargo of a small merchant vessel, Bromus’s connection to the force attracted the attention of a jedi knight, also hiding on the vessel, named Kels Vannert. Kels befriended Bromus on the trip across the galaxy, briefly explaining what lay dormant within the slave and what the knights stood for. Mesmerized by gallantry and skill of the knights, Bromus immediately wanted leave with Kels Vannart, and the jedi indeed wanted to save Bromus. Despite this, Kels was being tracked by dark jedi and knew he was in no position to liberate and safeguard a young boy when he was in danger. However the knight did promise he would return to Malastare to find Bromus.
This promise never came to be. While in the atmosphere of Malastare the merchant vessel was shot down by Darth Grixis, the same dark jedi Kels Vannart was fleeing from. The ship crashed into the jungles of Malastare and out of the wreckage emerged the jedi knight and Bromus. Kels Vannart began to fight for his life as Darth Grixis initiated a duel, and already wounded from the violent crash it was apparent to Bromus, who sat in horror watching the struggle, that the jedi knight was going to fall. Filled with anger and desperation against this sudden menace, Bromus attacked Darth Grixis. The boy was violently thrown back by an idle gesture of the force, mangling his body and sundering his bones. Crippled with pain, Bromus was unable to see his new found friend cut down by the dark jedi. Darth Grixis, now intrigued with Bromus’s determination and force sensitivity, approached the dying boy. Despite the slave’s agonizing wounds, the dark jedi could see the hatred and will to live burning in his eyes.
Bromus forever remembered that moment when Darth Grixis had asked, “You are dying, is this the end you want?”
Bromus had hissed a fading no, to which Darth Grixis had replied, “Give your life to me, and I’ll give you power.”
Bromus, more fearful of death then than overcome with the anger of Kels Vannart’s death, submitted to Darth Grixis. Thus began his tutelage in the dark side of the force.
Darth Grixis, a Chiss and former jedi knight, had initially left Bromus in the care of his first apprentice, a fallen jedi padawan named Yana Takaeli. The togruta female, only five years older than Bromus, established a close bond early in his indoctrination that both kept hidden from their master in fear of chastisement and separation. Split between teaching a maturing apprentice and one foreign to the ways of the force, Darth Grixis frequently passed Bromus off to other dark jedi and sith to establish a fundamental connection with the force. As with most dark side adepts, Bromus was cruelly mistreated. Only by surviving the brutality of training was one worthy to ascend in the dark side of the force, and despite being instilled with fear and hatred, Bromus naturally focused his determination to overcome obstacles instead of giving in to anger. Some of his tutors felt such indifference as timidity and warned Darth Grixis of Bromus’ weakness. Others found this a blessing and helped Bromus fortify his naturally strong composure and will. Bromus was naturally gifted in utilizing the force in physical combat. Much like the matukai force adepts, the apprentice used his body as a connection to the force more often than manipulating the external connections surrounding him. This natural affinity, an uncommon occurrence, became the basis of his training and prowess to his ties with the force.
Years of training and service had sculpted Bromus into a formidable apprentice Darth Grixis approved of. Where he lacked tenacity, outright cruelty and hatred, he made up for in determination, strength and cunning. Despite his merits, Bromus was seen as a weakling. His emotions for Yana, who instilled kindness and moderation within him, were unchecked due to his infrequent supervision and numerous masters. Furthermore, Darth Grixis’ philosophy of the force did not outright accept the malicious tenants of the dark side, but rather question them and how one could gain from it. This all became a catalyst when Yana Tekaeli, Darth Grixis, and Bromus encountered Yana’s former jedi master. Unable to engage him, Yana relented to Darth Grixis, who was barely able to defeat him. Overcome come with regret and sorrow, Yana attempted to leave Darth Grixis, and when confronted with execution at the hands of her recent master, the redemptive dark jedi submitted and died. In seeing Yana’s pain and death, Bromus was overcome with similar emotions. He cut down his wounded master and forsake everything he knew of the dark side. Remembering his brief childhood fascination with the jedi, and seeing Yana’s reaction to her former master, Bromus has set out to redeem himself. Without purpose, he has begun to wander the galaxy in hope that he finds meaning to what he saw emerge from Yana in her final moments.
