My apologies to Lissa! This was a scene she and I did while Ja'eeth was on her way back to Keldabe with Jeryndi's children and Ja'dan. This takes place before much of the rp that has happened on Mandalore to date. I just forgot to post it.
Medren
Of all three children, Medren had been the least enthusiastic about packing their belongings to go home... He hadn't lollygagged. He hadn't complained. He'd simply done as he'd been asked. It was hard to say what went through his head sometimes. Sometimes, he seemed like every other 10 year old kid. He wanted to play, he wanted attention, he picked on his siblings... And others, the kid couldn't crack a smile to save his life. He was hard to predict in moods and manners. Kel'dan had often called him too serious for his own good... This was one of those times.... He'd said almost nothing except please and thank you since hearing the news they were going home... Now, on the ship, and everything settled in for the trip home... He came to sit down beside his caretaker. Not quite his mother, but a caretaker. He didn't say anything, he just sat there... And waited for her to acknowledge his presence before he said anything.
Ja’eeth:
"Ja'dan and your sister all settled?" Ja'eeth had them in hyperspace, heading for the Mandal homeworld. The return to Corellia had been a swift one, and hopefully it would be the last time she'd have to pull things together for a quick trip. There was a part of her that was looking forward to having her feet planted on the solid ground of the 'Yiam, just as there had been some bit of her that had enjoyed the stable life of guardianship on Corellia. She was in the lounge of the ship, a ration pack of dried almost edibles open before her, barely picked at.
Medren:
"Yes," he said, nodding. He seemed to have something on his mind... But he was having trouble articulating it... "Can I ask you a difficult question?" He asked those from time to time-- the ones that had no real right or wrong answers... The ones that were more opinion or perspective related, rather than facts.
Ja’eeth:
"When have I ever told you no, Medren?" The ration pack was pushed toward him, a silent offer that he help himself.
Medren:
"Never, but I always expect there to be a first for everything," he said in his matter of fact tone. He gave her a small smile, but his eyes were serious. He ate a bite from the ration pack as he thought about how to ask his question... "We won't be staying with buir, will we." It was phrased like a question, but said like a statement.
Ja’eeth:
"Maybe for the first few days that you're back, but that is something that we will need to talk to Kel'dan about once we get there. There are some changes coming, but they are for the better we believe."
Medren:
He ate another bite as he listened to her speak, looking away for a long moment... And then frowned. "He's giving us back."
Ja’eeth:
"No," Ja'eeth shook her head, "He's letting you be where you belong."
Medren:
"Its Jeryndi?" he asked, looking up to meet her eyes.
Ja’eeth:
She had never lied to Medren, or his sister, before but the temptation was there to avoid answering this time. She wasn't even sure why. That apprehension was an answer in itself, forcing Ja'eeth's hand. Slowly she nodded, "Jeryndi is your father, yes."
Medren:
He looked down and away again. His expression was thoughtful... "I wasn't sure, but it had occured to me," he admitted. "He seems familiar."
Ja’eeth:
There was no response to that aside from a gentle nod.
Medren:
He picked up another piece of the ration and looked at it. "Marian looks like him." He looked up at her again, frowning slightly. "Do we scare you?"
Ja’eeth:
"Why would you scare me, Medren?"
Medren:
He shook his head. He looked a little frustrated because he wasn't sure where that question had come from... But then he leaned against her a little and simply sighed. "Even though we won't be with you much longer... I wanted to thank you for taking care of us."
Ja’eeth:
The arm he was leaning against moved slowly, drawing back to wrap across Medren's shoulders and tuck him closer a bit, "Medren, you don't need to thank me for that, and don't go thinking I wont miss you, or Ja'dan wont miss you. We will. So be happy, alright? Be happy with your father so Ja'dan and I won't need to be sad that you're gone."
Medren:
He gave her another smile. "I'll try. It'll be weird... And I will miss you, Kel'dan, and Ja'dan... But I worry more about Marian than myself."
Ja’eeth:
"Well, I fully expect the both of you to do what you can to make this easy on yourselves. This is your duty. This is your job, it is what Mandalore asks of you: to be in your new home, and to be happy there. It will be an adjustment, but adjustments are only that way until you get used to them."
Medren:
He stayed where he was, tucked against her and under her arm... He looked remarkably vulnerable in that position... "Are you gonna marry Kel'dan?" he asked.
Ja’eeth:
"I don't know," her answer was honest, "We've talked about it, but there are some things that we both need to do before it has even the smallest chance of becoming reality."
Medren:
He sighed softly. A little too heavy for someone his age should have to sound... Or even at all. "I want you both to be happy, Ja'eeth."
Ja’eeth:
"We will be," She gave his shoulders a squeeze, "But do not focus on our happiness, Medren. Focus on your own because we cannot be happy if you are not happy." Turning her head, she laid a light kiss against the top of his head.
Medren:
He gave her a speculative look... Like he was - really--thinking about that statement... "If we don't like where we're going... Later on... Would you adopt us back into the family?" he asked. "I mean... As adults? If we want to come back to Mandoa?"
Ja’eeth:
"That is not a question I can answer," Ja'eeth told him, still using that gentle tone, "because that is both many years off, and beyond my authority. I would take you back, if it were up to me, but at this moment it is not. If you wish, you will have to ask Kel'dan. He would be able to say for sure."
Medren:
"I get the reasons behind this... But I guess I would prefer to have been asked."
Ja’eeth:
"Oh? What do you think the reasons are?"
Medren:
He relaxes against her and sighs softly. "I think there are many reasons. And some, I think, are probably too complicated for me to understand... But I think Kel'dan wants Jeryndi to know us. To raise us. To give him the chance to be the father he couldn't be in the past for whatever reasons."
Ja’eeth:
"What would give you that idea?" Here was this child, speaking almost exactly the things she had talked about with Kel'dan. As she spoke, Ja'eeth made a mental note to replace her comm unit, and to tell Kel'dan to do the same.
Medren:
The look he gave her was a mixture of amusement, confusion and innocence that only a child could pull off. "I think it's the only explanation for allowing him to visit us when we weren't even at home."
Ja’eeth:
"I think you are working too hard to connect dots," she responded with a small smile before drawing her arm back from around his shoulders, "Go ahead and finish that. I'm going to go check on Ja'dan and your sister." She was starting to rise.
Medren:
He nodded and reached for for the ration packet... "You think I think too much?" he asked her. But he wasn't trying to stop her.
Ja’eeth:
"No, thinking is never a bad thing, Medren," she said that as she stood, looking down at him, "Drawing conclusions when there are no conclusions to draw is." She reached out and gave his shoulder a pat before turning to go.
Medren:
He watched her go and simply ate.
